Creating an Outlined Image

Here's a really easy way to create an outlined image! Using this method, you can easily make multiple outlines on your image! Some icons copyrighted Neopets Inc.
  1. First, open up your program. I use Adobe Photoshop CS2, but this should work on almost every version of Photoshop. If you want to know if your program will work, check and see if it has some sort of stroke command.
  2. Pick an image. If doing a Neopets outline, I recommend using a shopkeeper.

I am going to use this image:

It is best to use one that does not have any white in it, and also does not cut off anywhere.

  3. Now, open up a new document in your program. Make it the same size as your shop keeper (that should be 150x150). Paste in your image.

    The image pasted in:

  4. Now use the magic wand to tool to select the white around your image:

  5. Clear the white from your image, then deselect.

  6. Now, you may choose one of the following two methods to add the outline.

    Here's the first one:

    1. Go to Edit and select Stroke.

    2. Change the width to 5px and change the color to a color in your image, preferably one that is on the inside, so that it won't border the stroke.

Note: If you do not have 5 pixels surrounding your image on all sides, then make it a little smaller. You don't want your stroke to be cut off on the edges! If you can't do much of an outline with how your image currently is, you can make the image bigger by going to Image and selecting Canvas Size. Then adjust the pixels. This will change the size of your canvas, and not your image! Also, make sure that it strokes on the OUTSIDE.

This is the image after being stroked. I changed the canvas size in order to have more room to work with it.

Now for the next method. This works best if you are only going to have one outline, and also if you want to do some cool effects. This works only on Photoshop as far as I know.
    1. Double click on the layer with the image you want to stroke.

      This window will pop up:

    2. Screw around with the options and look at your image, and when you are satisfied press ok.

  7. Now that you have finished outlining your image, just save it in a .png, .jpg, or .gif format for best results. Then upload it to your favorite image host, paste it onto your site, and, voila! You have a beautiful outline!
