How to turn your mac into a local website server

This is only for your network to access -- remember that. It is possible to turn it into a world wide webs server. You still do need to protect it with firewall, as its possible to hack it.
First, turn on your computers Apache web server program, built into all macs. System Prefences >> Services >> Personal Web sharing

Now, visit localhost in your web browser. It should show your IP at the bottom of your screen (above, the blurred out section). Type that into any other computer on your network.

Edit the Files

We recomend Smultron for HTML/PHP editting: Click here to download Smultron
Now you can edit your website! Go to your home directory, then click on library, then click on webserver, go to documents, and make a new file with Smultron called index.php -- this will be your front page.

Congrats -- you now have your own personal website. You can use this to test a real website; if port 80 is open, you can get a static IP (usually costs a small fee) and get a domain for that. Otherwise, you can use this server on your local host.
