Have you heard about this yet? In Vilnius (the capital of the Baltic country Lithuania) the mayor took a tank and drove right over a luxury car. Why, you might ask? For the sake of bike lanes. See, in Vilnius, and surely many other cities around the world (likely mine included, if only we had bike lanes), they’ve been having a problem with people parking their luxury vehicles on bike lanes, apparently thinking that the price tag on their cars puts them above the law. The mayor was absolutely sick of the nonsense, since the obstructions often proved dangerous for cyclists, so he decided to make a scene, and mowed right over a car that was parked in a bike land. Pure. Brilliance. Although I don’t endorse car smashing. Or tanks. But still, that guy is rather awesome.
Window-Sill Garden: Day 2
Today is the second day since my plants germinated, and they are looking quite nice! They’re already quite tall…I’m probably naive, but I’ve been really surprised at how rapidly they grow! You might also notice that another seed germinated overnight, which I was rather excited about! My oregano is also growing well, thankfully. I don’t think my thyme has sprouted yet, although there is one tiny plant that is popping up. No sign from the lavender either, but that’s not to be expected.
I also am close to finishing a project that I had mentioned earlier…I’ve been working on knitting this shopping bag made from cut-up plastic bags strung together. It’s actually turning out really nice, and all I have left to do is add the handles!
Window-Sill Garden: Day 1
I’ve started growing an herb and tea garden on my windowsill, and I’m excited to say it’s going very well!
It’s incredibly easy to grow a windowsill garden — you can grow seeds in practically any container that has a hole for drainage. I’m planning on adding an article on this topic soon!
In two tiny flower pots, I planted arugula, along with thyme in one pot and lavender in the other. Thyme and arugula are both very good for herbal teas (I’m also planning on eventually planting some mint and other herbs for tea!), while arugula is good because it germinates very quickly (mint and lavender can take more than a week, while arugula can take as little as two days, as it did for me).
I’m planning to record the growth of my plants on here, so here’s the first entry:
I woke up this morning to find that my arugula had already germinated — in fact, it’s gotten quite tall already!
I also took some runners off of the oregano plant in our front yard and potted them. I love the smell of oregano; it’s probably my favorite herb!! It seems to be doing well; I bet that it’s glad to get out of the heat — yesterday reached at least 111 F!!
Anyways, I think that I will try to update daily, as well as (as I already mentioned) write an article about this. Container gardening is a great way to enjoy plants when you live in a climate that is hostile to gardening, or if you live somewhere that doesn’t have a lot of space. You can fill all the windowsills of your house, and probably get better yields than some people that garden outside!
